How to Start a Blog

Learn how you can start your very own blog.

As you all know, I've moved to a new blog. It was a decision I've wanted to make for a while now. I'm very happy and pleased with this new blog and I want to share with you how you can create your own blog. I'm still in the process on working on some of these steps and I'm hoping to have my very own domain name for this blog at the end of this month! Let's get started on the steps you need to take to create your own blog!

1. Decide what you want to blog about.

For me, it was web design and graphic design. I knew I wanted to focus on helpful tips and how-tos on creating your own website and/or blog. Of course, I do have a few other blogs that I run for my other businesses. The main thing I'm trying to say here is that you do need to choose just one or two general direction(s) for your blog. If you do choose more than one topic, choose the one you want to mainly focus on.

2. Blogger versus WordPress?

This is the number one question when it comes to blogging. I'm sure there are some who will think I'm crazy on this one. But when you are starting out, you should choose the most easiest blogging platform and that would be Blogger. There is also a difference in price between the two and they both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

When I started this blog and many others, I decided to go with Blogger. I did this for several reason:
  1.  I wanted something that was easy for me to use and that I knew how to use.
  2.  Since I know how to create templates and other things for Blogger, it will save me money in the long run.
To be honest, I don't believe in the whole "I wont take you seriously because you have a blogspot blog." To me blogging is blogging, no matter where you blog at. You should choose something that will work for you. Google and Blogger has a lot to offer and I'm sure WordPress does too. Does WordPress.com (free) or Wordpress.org (paid) offer more? Does Blogger offer more? Come back soon for those answers in my next blog post.

3. Choose a name.

Once you've decided what to blog about and which platform is for you, you'll need to chose a name. Your blog name should be relevant to the topic you have chosen. You do need to be mindful of what name you're choosing. Here are some suggestions to think about when choosing your blog name:
  1. Make it unique so you're easily recognizable and easy for your readers to find you online.
  2. Think about the future. Will you grow out of your name in a few years? Or can it apply to possible changes in your blogging?
  3. Get your own domain name. Make sure no one else have the domain name you want. I would suggest securing the domain name as soon as you can so you don't end up having to change everything in the future. This is just in case no one else can snatch your domain from you.
  4. When creating social media sites, make the name for all of them the name you are using for your blog. You don't have to use them right away. You just want to have your name in place just in case someone else has the same idea as you.
  5. Decide if you will use your personal email address or if you want to set up a domain email address.
  6. Find a hosting site that you would like to use. Only do this if you decide to go with a self hosted blog at WordPress.org. (I like to use Google Domains for all my domain urls)

4. Get a blog design.

When creating a blog, you are offed free templates or themes to use. I would suggest getting a pre-made or custom blog design. Since I'm a graphic and web designer, I've created all of my Blogger templates. You could take a look at the Blogger templates I offer at my shop (coming soon) or you can search Etsy for Blog or Blogger Themes or Templates. You can find some really great templates at a great price.

If you don't want to pay for a template or theme, teach yourself how to code the HTML or CSS. You can do a Google search for the things you would like to learn. If you have an idea for a blog design, sketch it down before you jump into editing the HTML or CSS coding. The sketch will help you know what you want and where you want to put things.

5. Get a Bloglovin account. (optional)

Before you start blogging, I would suggest creating a bloglovin.com account and add claim your blog. In order to grab your RSS feed for your blogger blog, you can use the URL below. The reason why you should do this first before you start blog is because you want all of your blog posts to post to bloglovin. If you wait to sign up and you already have posted to your blog, THEY WILL NOT SHOW UP ON YOUR BLOGLOVIN BLOG PAGE. So it's best to do this first before you start posting.

Change the YOURBLOG with your URL name that is before the .blogspot

6. Start blogging.

Now that you are all step up, start typing up your first blog post. Blog about your life, your adventures, hobbies, and anything you would want to blog about. If you have a topic picked out, write about that. Be open to any and all possibilities.
